Five members of the group flew to Canberra on Wednesday to put forward their case for federal funding to minister Dan Tehan.
Reference group spokesperson Mitch Hanlon said they were armed with letters of support from all Tamworth high schools, Tamworth, Gunnedah and Liverpool Plains councils, the Tamworth Business Chamber and multiple business.
New England MP Barnaby Joyce and Parkes MP Mark Coulton also attended.

The state government has already committed more than $26 million to the project.
