The 55-year-old Oxley police sergeant, who cannot be named, fronted Narrabri Local Court for sentencing this week.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of disseminating child abuse material and possessing child abuse material.
The officer has been suspended with pay since he was first charged in January.
The Group Six unit of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) took over the prosecution of the case because the accused was a serving police officer.

After sentencing submissions in court, Magistrate Alexander Mijovich convicted the sergeant of both offences.
He put the suspended officer on a two-year Community Correction Order, or good behaviour bond.
As part of the order, the officer is prohibited from committing any further offences during the two-year bond and must attend court if called upon. The order will not be supervised.
It was the police case that the offences occurred in December, last year.
After an internal investigation, the sergeant, who is attached to the Oxley Police District in the Western Region, was served in January with a court attendance notice charging him with both offences.
At the time of his charges, police said the sergeant had been suspended with pay.
It's understood the officer's work status is under review, following the sentencing, and will ultimately be determined by the NSW Police Commissioner.
