This morning's power outage in East Tamworth is still being investigated by Essential Energy.
Essential Energy community relations northern manager David Crough said after sensing a fault, the electricity network automatically switched power off to ensure the safety of the public and their property.
"Crews worked as quickly as safety allowed to re-route the electricity network around the fault and power was restored to 1671 customers at 8.41am and to a further customer at 11.09am," Mr Crough said.
By midday on Tuesday, all homes and businesses had power available either from the electricity network or via a generator.
"The cause of the unplanned power outage is still being investigated. However we do know there has been significant damage to a padmount transformer, underground cable and other electricity network equipment," Mr Crough said.
Given the amount of damage to the electricity network, Essential Energy crews will not complete repairs and restore the electricity network to its normal configuration until Wednesday.
"The repair work will be extensive and will require the replacement of the padmount transformer and a section of underground cable," David said.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank customers for their understanding."
