Here's a list of residents who were honoured at the weekend.
Reg Jamieson
Years of service to the National Servicemen's Association and Returned and Services League of Australia, as well as involvement in various other community groups and organisations, has seen Moree's Reg Jamieson recognised on the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Andrew John Cross
Walcha News sports and gossip contributing journalist AJ 'Coogie' Cross has been recognised for his service to the community of Walcha. The 63-year-old Walcha local, by his own calculation, has spent in excess of 130 years (and most of his weekends) involved in various sports clubs in the town.
Alf Scott
Just a month on from his passing, the late Alf Scott has been given the recognition he deserves for his significant contribution to Moree with an Order of Australia Medal (OAM). The Moree legend, who sadly passed away on May 2, aged 94, was named in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours List for service to the Moree community.
Dr David McDonald
It takes grit to do what Tamworth hospital paediatrician and forensic medicine practitioner David McDonald does. Just as comfortable in the clinic as he is in the court room, Dr McDonald has treated thousands of children in his three decade career. Today, he's been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
Robert Barwell
Robert Barwell, pastoralist, from Balala, has been honoured on this years Queen's Birthday Honours list. He has been awarded an Australian Medal for beef cattle industry and bio-security for his work in the beef cattle industry. Mr Barwell is working nationally on creating 'trade access' to our rural produce and also identifying any 'risks to trade' which is fundamental to our national economic development.
Kerri Wallace
Kerri Wallace has been awarded the Australian Service Medal ASM in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours List for her dedication to the safety of her community. Ms Wallace is a Retained Firefighter in Uralla, (Deputy Captain) and has been serving the Uralla community for 10 years. She continues to serve the people of NSW with distinction, as well as having a great love for the region.
Lester Thurston
Lester Thurston is well-known for his service to the community of Tooraweenah and has been given a Medal of the Order of Australia. Mr Thurston is the secretary of the Tooraweenah Memorial Hall Committee, chief organiser of Anzac Day events, a patron of the local public school for more than two decades and an avid supporter of the Tooraweenah Endurance ride.
Mr Thurston is actively involved in his local Lions Club and previously volunteered at the Driver Reviver Station.
Douglas Thornton
Surgeon Douglas Thornton has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to dentistry in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Mr Thornton provided services in affiliation with the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and the University of Sydney to patients in Bourke, Brewarrina and Inverell through to the Armajun Aboriginal Health Service. He has been a visiting medical officer to Tamworth's Tamara hospital since 1984.
Mr Thornton also provides monthly clinical services at Inverell District Public Hospital since 2015.
