Armidale man Glen Jones has been missing since Tuesday and his disappearance has sparked a major land and water search around the Dumaresq Dam area.
Officers believe the 41-year-old might have entered the water but there has been no trace since he was seen last week.
NSW Police divers were deployed from Sydney last Wednesday to search the water using sonar technology.
"A sonar technique did not locate the body," New England Superintendent Scott Tanner said.

"Whilst this is a good indicator, it is not 100 per cent due to the bottom of the dam."
He said the divers had completed the search using sonar and have returned to Sydney.
"Whilst all indications are that the person went into the water, police are continuing all avenues of investigation. Police will continue to search the dam and surrounds over the next few days," Superintendent Tanner said.
The search for Mr Jones has involved police, the SES and family and friends, and will continue, Superintendent Tanner said.
Mr Jones, 41, was last seen leaving a home in Newton Street, Armidale, about 5.20pm last Tuesday.
Police and family hold grave concerns for his welfare.
Mr Jones is described as being Caucasian in appearance, about 175cm tall, of medium build with brown hair and green eyes.
He was last seen wearing a high visibility jacket and track pants.
Anyone with information on the search or Mr Jones' whereabouts is urged to contact Armidale police on 6771 0699.
