Ben Michie appeared in an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Armidale Local Court on Thursday morning charged with escaping lawful custody.
He was not required to enter a plea to the charge and made no application for bail, which was refused by the registrar.
Michie will be returned to Corrective Services' custody and will front court again next week.
The 27-year-old was arrested at Mulligans Hut, off the Gwydir Highway, about halfway between Glen Innes and Grafton on Wednesday afternoon.
The inmate was discovered missing at 8.50am on Tuesday from the low-security Glen Innes prison during a routine count by Corrective Services' officers on Tuesday morning.
EARLIER
POLICE have recaptured a prisoner who has been on the run since Tuesday.
Oxley police reported the man was arrested at Mulligans Hut, off the Gwydir Highway, about halfway between Glen Innes and Grafton.
He was found at 3.45pm on Wednesday before he was taken back to Glen Innes police station and formally charged.

There have been several escapes from the Glen Innes jail in recent years including one in January, as well as two in October last year, who were both arrested in a dramatic police chase with police in Armidale.
