The annual Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft had more than 2000 nominations.
"Unfortunately, we can only accept 1250 nominations, with some people nominating for six or eight different events," secretary Steve Butler said.
"We've been overwhelmed by the number of nominations and there is now a waiting list."
The rodeo and campdraft has been bucking since 1955, with the event marking its 65th anniversary next year.
This year's campdraft starts on Friday morning because of the high nominations.
"Rodeo numbers have been increasing every year, however, we won't know final numbers until May 31," Mr Butler said.
"For rodeo, prizemoney paid out will be more than $80,000, although the final amount won't be known until that weekend as we have 'add back' from nominations."
About 2500 spectators are expected through the gate over the weekend.
Run by the Coonamble Rodeo Association, the event brings thousands of dollars worth of money for the local economy.
The association was formed in 1946 as a non-profit organisation with the aim to run an annual rodeo and Campdraft in Coonamble.
It is supported by about 50 volunteers.
Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft attracts cowboys, cowgirls and spectators from across the central western plains of NSW to the edge of the Outback.
Cowboys traditionally launch from the chutes competing for prizes in steer wrestling, calf roping, barrel racing and glamour events such as the saddle bronc, bareback and bull rides.
The rodeo unites the whole community, with Coonamble holding a number of other events for visitors.
There's a patchwork and quilting exhibition, live bands and other social events. The junior rodeo, held on Monday, is a growing component of the event. For more information, visit coonamblerodeoandcampdraft.com.au
