Jeffrey Allan Smith, 33, appeared via video link in Tamworth District Court wearing prison greens on Tuesday and has pleaded guilty to a robbery at The Good Guys where staff were threatened in June last year.
It would be in Smith's best interests to wait for the psychological report before he is sentenced, Judge Jeffery McLennan said.
"Your solicitor has done everything she can to get all the available information on you, which would be the most helpful thing to have when I come to sentence you," he said.
"I'm told a report will help me better understand you personally and the reasons why you might have done the things you are going to be sentenced for."

Smith agreed to wait in custody until the report can be released from Corrective Services NSW to the district court.
"I'm more than happy to wait so you have everything you need at your disposal," he said.
"That's fine by me." The matter returns to court on Thursday.
