With the University of New England seeking funding for its 500-person campus in the city's main street, some have speculated the Newcastle university - which already has a well-established medical campus in Tamworth near the hospital - would consider expanding its facilities.
The recently re-elected New England MP, Barnaby Joyce, told the Leader the University of Newcastle had been in touch with him about its future.
But despite meeting with Mr Joyce, a spokesperson for the university said there were no immediate plans to increase its presences in Tamworth.

"As he is a valued local representative, we meet with Mr Joyce regularly," he said.
"Our focus continues to be the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health which is located adjacent the Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital in Johnston Street."
If it does choose to expand, the university has plenty of room with the substantial seven-hectare block of land.
"To ensure the people of Tamworth are well serviced by higher education and get the best value for money from any government investment, we may look at options to consolidate our current activity in Tamworth onto this site," the spokesperson said.
"This will form part of an ongoing dialogue with all tiers of government.
"We will continue to work closely with the University of New England wherever this offers benefit to the local community and the region. This includes collaboration in the Joint Medical Program, amongst other activities."
