There are more than 109,000 people registered to vote in the Parkes electorate.
By the close of the polls on Saturday at 6pm, all of them needed to have cast their votes in the 2019 federal election.
A valid and sufficient reason needs to be provided or the non-voter will be required to pay the $20 fine. Reasons such as being ill, having to save a life, natural disasters or car crashes are all considered valid reasons for not voting.
It is up to each electorate's Divisional Returning Officer to determine whether a valid and sufficient reason has been given for not voting.
Compulsory voting at federal elections was introduced across Australia in 1924. Failing to vote without a valid and sufficient reason is an offence under the Commonwealth Electoral Act.
