Started up by a group of friends who all have kids that play, the fledgling club is making it's presence felt in the Tamworth District Football competition. Not only are the Mountain Goats fielding 13 teams but three of them - the men's first and reserve grade, and 15/16s - are undefeated after two rounds.

"It's been a great start for the club," club president Matt Bridge said.

Hoping to get at least six teams, he said the response has been well beyond their expectations.

"We're over the moon about how many people have come," he said.

Especially the junior numbers.

"That's what we aimed for, to get a club based on junior teams," Bridge said.

"To get 10 in our first season that's great."

The Mountain Goats moniker is the brainchild of Dean Hoy - a reference to the goats that are a common sight around Moore Creek, while Adam Jones, an avid West Tigers supporter, suggested the orange and black colours.

While developing their junior base is a strong focus so to is having fun, with the social side something Bridge said something they are really trying to push.

The 15s/16s team have been particularly impressive.

They sit on top of the table and have scored over 20 goals in their two games to none against, but will face a big test when the competition resumes on Saturday against the also unbeaten North Companions Black.

The senior sides meanwhile play South Lightning.

First grade are second after notching a win and a draw, while reserve grade are third (on goal differential) and third grade fifth.

Bridge admitted he has been surprised by how well the first grade side is faring given that none of them were regular first graders previously.

The third grade side is pretty well made up of guys that have never played soccer before, although some of them do have good footballing pedigree.

"We've got guys like Paul Lawrence and Pete Manning, and Dean Finlay is playing," Bridge said.

Making the switch from AFL, Finlay has the distinction of scoring the Goats' first goal.
