Shane Barry Olsen appeared via video link in Tamworth Local Court on Wednesday from prison where he is being held on charges of malicious wounding and common assault.
Legal Aid solicitor Wendy McAuliffe requested a short adjournment in the case after a charge certificate - which outlines the offences the Crown will push ahead with - was filed in court.
Ms McAuliffe said the case would be moved to another solicitor but did not outline the full reasons to the court.
"The matter will be transferred from Legal Aid to the ALS [Aboriginal Legal Service]," she told the court.

"Mr Olsen has requested his file be transferred to Aboriginal Legal Service."
Magistrate Julie Soars granted the adjournment and told Olsen he would reappear in court in May.
"Bail is not applied for today, and it's refused," she said.
Olsen has been in custody since he handed himself into police in Tamworth on Christmas night.
The 45-year-old is accused of attacking a 48-year-old man about 2.30pm on December 25 at a hostel on Johnston Street in North Tamworth.
Detectives allege Olsen got into an argument with the older man inside a room at the group home before stabbing him in the leg.
Police then claim he fled the scene.
Officers were alerted to the stabbing and arrived to find the injured man with a leg wound in the group home.
The 48-year-old was taken by ambulance to Tamworth hospital for treatment.
He was treated by doctors on Christmas night and left hospital shortly after.
