POLICE are investigating the cause of a crash which saw a car burst into flames in Gunnedah on Wednesday night.

The car collided with a tree on the side of the road on Porcupine Hill about 9.40pm, before flames erupted in the car's engine bay and cabin.
Gunnedah Fire and Rescue crews and the RFS extinguished the blaze within minutes, and a 21-year-old male driver was treated on the scene by ambulance paramedics.

Gunnedah police Sergeant Mark Benson said an 18-year-old passenger helped free the driver from the car before the fire took hold.
Sergeant Benson also said the passenger left the scene before emergency services arrived, but later presented at Gunnedah hospital.
Police are yet to get an official statement from both of the young men and are investigating the cause of the crash.
