They finished the Group 19 second division season winless after coming agonisingly close on a number of occasions.
Round one this year they were downed by Uralla but Saturday's round two clash against the Tenterfield Tigers saw the hoodoo broken.
The Roos shot out of the blocks and racked up a 42-10 win over the undermanned Tigers.
"I think the biggest thing was our want to win," skipper Steve Eveleigh said.
"We really emphasised how much we needed the win on Saturday and the boys came out and stuck with the game plan and played unselfish footy."
The Roos experienced a wealth of player movement in the off-season, including experienced halves Glen Olrich and Jason Latham rejoining the club.
"Having the experience that Latho [Latham] and Daka [Olrich] bring to halves is the biggest difference from last year and our back row is playing great as well," Eveleigh said.
"Especially Brody Smith leading the pack around."
Tenterfield struggled to gather troops for the clash with only a run on side of 13.
"All respect to Tenterfield as well though. Never easy travelling hours away with no bench and they never gave up," Eveleigh said.
"When we knew they had no bench it was our intention to kick early and deep to turn them around then go wide with it and was good to see the plan working later in the half.
There's still plenty of work to do but Eveleigh is hopeful the win over the Tigers provides a building block for a successful 2019 season.
"We know it's going to be a different game out there, I just hope that this win was the corner the team needed to turn to get a few more wins this season," he said.
The Jillaroos also ensured Tenterfield would depart Walcha winless with a 20-4 win over the Tigers league tag team.
The Tigers league tag team posted the first four-pointer of the day via Breanna Field.
Walcha hit back through Nicola Hoy and Bonnie Brown to lead 10-4 at the break.
The second stanza saw Walcha post a further 10 points with tries to Robyn Broadbent and Bec Hoy.
Earlier in the day in the cross-code double header, the Walcha Rams rugby union team defeated Inverell 69-27.
