A MAN will remain in custody charged with stabbing a Kmart employee in the face in Tamworth earlier this week.
Brendan Peter Suey made no application for bail in Tamworth Local Court on Tuesday, a day after he appeared in the same court and pleaded not guilty to reckless wounding.
Suey, 38, has admitted to shoplifting a Bluetooth speaker from the Kmart store about 12.15pm on Sunday.
When an employee stopped the accused as he walked out, Suey allegedly turned on him, stabbing him near the eye with a pair of the store's scissors.
Suey fled and was arrested in Fitzroy Plaza just minutes later.
The 49-year-old employee was taken to hospital for treatment but has since been released.
Suey was taken for assessment in hospital on Monday, but was returned to the custody of police the following day.
During the brief proceedings on Tuesday, he was formally denied bail by magistrate Roger Prowse, who ordered police to compile a brief of evidence into the case.
He will remain behind bars until the case returns to court in June.
