Last November the Sandakan Memorial adjacent the Anzac Gates was also vandalised, with the Tamworth RSL sub-branch suspecting the same vandal carried out both attacks.
Recently Tamworth Regional Council applied for a $10,000 Veterans Affairs grant on behalf of the Tamworth RSL sub-branch for the repairs to the gates, with the remaining $7000 of the grant earmarked to be used on maintenance and repairs of other memorials, including the bronze Sandakan scale replica.
