THE council has officially rejected a request from a Tamworth farmer to cull kangaroos which have "overrun" their grazing land.

The property which is owned by the council at leased by a grazier adjoins the Tamworth hospital and it's also close to some heavily used roads as well as residential property.
Russell Webb raised the matter a fortnight ago, but ended up voting against the cull.
However, the matter could be revisited.

"We don't want to see the land suffer degradation from over grazing from introduced species like cattle or sheep or native species like kangaroos," Cr Webb said.
"If those numbers get out of hand and cause degradation to the land, it is something we'll need to revisit.
"If we do have a cull, we're going to have do it in the interest of the long term sustainability of the land."
The site has frontages on both Forest and Moore Creek roads.
It sits behind the tip, the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health Tamworth education centre, McCarthy college and Calrossy Anglican School's William Cowper campus.
