According to the charity, women can resort to using wadded up newspaper, socks or toilet paper to manage their period each month as well many girls who miss school because their family cannot afford the necessities.
"Many of the community workers we speak to tell us that by not having to ask a worker for sanitary items it can be quite empowering to those who feel that they have very little power or dignity in their lives," coordinator Leanne Semple said.
The community centre was selected for the location of the vending machine because it provided easy access for those in need and the centre is a hub for many health and community services.
