Numbers quickly grew and the group became the Tamworth Choral Society, rehearsals were held in the Jubilee Hall and subscriptions of one shilling per quarter were payable in advance.
Now, 70 years later, the Tamworth Choral Society will take the city on a trip down memory lane.
The concert has all the favourites from the 50s to now, president Angela Sproats said.
"The makeup of the choir is mostly retirees, I'd love to work out the median age of the choir but I haven't worked up the cheek," she laughed.
"One of the songs we will be doing is called Linden Lea, the first song the choir performed at its first concert in 1949."
For at least three decades the choir has provided the backdrop to numerous Arts Council Gilbert and Sullivan productions that toured towns across the region.
It's presented at local concerts, retirement homes, the Christmas Carol services and Anzac Day commemorations.
And, it's been quite competitive at eisteddfods over the years and still competes in an annual event.
Past musical directors and choir members have been invited to the enjoy the Down Memory Lane 70th anniversary concert.
There are about 45 choir members performing in the concert, and Ms Sproats said anyone who likes music and singing is encouraged to join.
It's just a fun group of people and it's therapeutic. I see music and singing as a real gift to be able to use and everyone has got it.

"We do a variety of songs but we try to make sure it works for a target audience and brings in a crowd," she said.

Choir members don't need to know how to read sheet music but it certainly helps, Ms Sproats said.
Through the years the choir has performed a number of moving concerts, from Songs to Die For that ironically included a rendition of Eric Idle's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life to Rehearsal, a relaxed concert style that gave an insight into a usual evening practice with the choir.
