Mr Joyce said declaring he would put his hat in the ring to return to the top job if the leadership was spilled was potentially a misstep, downplaying his comments earlier in the week as "stating the bleeding obvious".

"We are going to go to this election with Michael McCormack and with Scott Morrison, and I hope we do everything we can to get them federally elected," Mr Joyce told Nine's Today on Wednesday.
