Police have been told a motorcyclist collided with a kangaroo, causing him to fall off his bike, before being struck by a passing utility.
The man died at the scene.
He has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 20s.
Emergency services were called to the New England Highway scene, approximately 40km north of Tamworth, at 8am today following reports of a crash.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to the accident, but no transports were made by the service.
The highway was reopened early on Sunday afternoon.

The New England Highway was closed early on Sunday morning after a motorcyclist crashed their bike north of Bendemeer, near the turn-off to Kentucky.
Diversions were in place, however one lane has recently been re-opened with emergency services still on the scene.
Roads and Maritime services are advising motorists to allow for extra travel time if they are driving on the New England Highway between Armidale and Tamworth.
