Tamworth's top temperatures this month have averaged more than four degrees above the long-term mean for February.
Weatherzone meteorologist Craig McIntosh said west north-west winds was bringing hot air across to the region causing temperatures to rise well into the afternoon.
He said a south-eastern wind flow driven by a high pressure ridge east of Tamworth would bring cooler coastal air through the region from Friday.
The winds will be stronger and there remains some uncertainty about the impact of tropical cyclone Oma which is tracking relatively far south on the Queensland coast.
Tamworth RFS superintendent Allyn Purkiss said crews had a number of strategies to tackle whatever potential winds and storms hit the region in the coming days.
He said lightning had recently sparked an out of control fire at Crawney Pass on some very steep and remote terrain.
He urged landholders to be vigilant following any storms given how dry the ground cover had become.
"Go for a drive after any storm and check for trees with lightning strikes," he said. "They should deal with it or if they can't contact the RFS."
