Clerk of the House of Representatives David Elder has served in the parliament for 38 years, including just over five years in his current job.
Speaker Tony Smith said Mr Elder had announced his intention to retire "in the not-too-distant future", with a replacement to start in July or August when the new parliament sits after the election.
