A TAMWORTH animal rescue shelter could be forced to close its doors as it issues a desperate call out for volunteers and new leadership.
Heaven Can Wait will hold its annual general meeting on March 8, where it will elect a new president and vice-president to guide the organisation forward.
A post on the shelter's social media page suggested the organisation would fold if the positions couldn't be filled and an influx of volunteers wasn't found.
Founder and former president Kate Davies said she'd be gutted if the shelter went under.
Ms Davies stepped aside from the top job at the end of 2018, but stayed on as a volunteer, and has offered to help the newly elected leadership transition into the role.
She said the presidential role had become increasingly demanding.
"It's a 365-day-a-year commitment," she said.
"Especially the last three years have been gruelling with very little time off.
"The dogs we get from the pound aren't always nice well-behaved well-mannered creatures, they do require some rehabilitation, some more than others."
Last year, the shelter re-homed 114 dogs and more than 80 cats.
Ms Davies said it would ideal to have about 10 volunteers on the roster to ensure a few people aren't lumped with all of the work.
People can enter nominations for the presidential roles via email to the secretary at hcwas01@gmail.com.

The post said “unforeseen circumstances” had forced the shelter to issue the call out for help.
According to its Facebook page, Heaven Can Wait “is a self funded volunteer organisation”.
“Our aim is to rescue animals currently waiting on death row in council pounds,” the page said.
Heaven Can Wait has been contacted for comment.
More to come.
