Anthony Raymond Taylor was refused bail in Tamworth Local Court on a raft of charges following his arrest by a specialist strike force, set-up by the state's sex crimes squad and Oxley detectives.
The 58-year-old is accused of attacking a 54-year-old woman before 11pm on Saturday.
The woman arrived home and it is then when Strike Force Yulong detectives allege Taylor detained the woman, bound and gagged her and sexually assaulted her.
He's then alleged to have fled the scene on foot.
Detectives will allege the assault wasn't random, but Taylor targeted and knew his victim.

The house was declared a crime scene and combed for clues while officers doorknocked the neighbourhood.
During that canvass, detectives spoke to Taylor, who they allege made several attempts to contact and meet the woman in the days following the attack.
Detectives seized Taylor's phone and will allege they found videos of the woman that were filmed outside her home without her knowledge.
A White Street property in East Tamworth was raided as part of the investigation where several items of interest were seized, police said.
Taylor was denied bail by Magistrate Julie Soars but was not required to enter pleas to three charges of aggravated sexual assault and deprive liberty; stalking; two counts of peep or prying; two counts of aggravated filming of a person in a private act without consent; and three firearm-related charges including not keeping a firearm safely.
He will return to court in April.
Detective Darcy said the firearm-related charges "arose during the course of the investigation by Strike Force Yulong detectives".
"That investigation is continuing and there are a number of lines of inquiry still to complete," he said.
