As usual RSL sub-branch president Bob Chapman ran proceedings, and used the opportunity to not only pay homage to the fallen soldiers of Sandakan, but also the late Father Tom Shanahan.

"This Sandakan service was one of his babies - everyone admired Tom - he is another one we will never forget," Mr Chapman said.

"I am sure he would be very happy looking down and seeing so many people at this service."

Mr Chapman also took aim at some recent spate of vandalism on local war memorials, juxtaposing those "selfish acts" against the "selfless acts of serving Australians during times of war." 

President of Tamworth Legacy Greg Roese than gave a stirring commemorative address, describing some of the horrors that the soldiers endured both at the camp, and specifically on the death marches, which saw only six survivors from over 2500 prisoners.

"May we never forget what they endured, and may we display the same courage," he said.

The service finished with the laying of wreaths, before the final prayers, bagpipes and national anthem.
