The news comes after a stellar 2018 season by the Boars hooker, where he won the Group 19 first grade best and fairest award and top try scorer.
Swan is entering his tenth season with the club and it will be his first coaching role.
He replaces Scott Girard who is stepping down from the role after leading the team to a finals berth last year.
Club president Todd Mitchell said it’s worked out really well with Swan coming in as coach.
“In conversation it just came about and he showed some interest in captain coaching the first grade side,” Mitchell said.
“I told him to put an application in and it just sort of fell into place.”
In a further boost for the side, ex-Queensland Cup player Dan Thompson will be Swan’s assistant coach, after moving to Moree from Brisbane last year.
Working with the now retired player is a prospect that Swan is really looking forward to.
"He seems like a nice bloke. I can see us getting along really well and creating a good culture down there.”
The pair know there is still lots of room for improvement for the team in 2019.
“We really want to get a team that can compete and work on our defence and stop teams from scoring points,” Swan said.
Mitchell is excited about what a fresh face at the helm can bring to the side.
“He’ll bring new ideas. The last few years we’ve been going on with the same ideas,” he said.
“A bit of change is good, he’ll come in with fresh ideas. It’ll be a little bit different with his new ideas, but it’s a new start.”
The Boars begin their preseason training next Monday January 14.
