Council’s water director, Bruce Logan, hoped the restrictions would be able to reduce the city’s daily consumption to 20 to 25 megalitres per day.
In previous weeks, daily water consumption in Tamworth was recorded at 39 megalitres.
Level two restrictions are enforced in Tamworth when Chaffey falls below 35 per cent capacity.
Those restrictions could be in place within weeks.
Nundle is currently on level three, while Manilla is already at level two and Bendemeer had level one recently applied.
Barraba and Attunga are on permanent water conservation measures.
