The 49-year-old is alleged to have bashed a 36-year-old man during an altercation in Petra Avenue about 8am on Wednesday.
Several witnesses called police after the confrontation unfolded in the street.
Police will allege the older man armed himself with a weapon, believed to be a piece of wood, and struck the younger man.
Officers arrived and arrested the 49-year-old.
Paramedics treated the younger man at the scene for injuries to his legs and ribs. He was taken to Tamworth hospital in a stable condition.
He was granted conditional bail to front Tamworth Local Court later this month.
Police have spoken to several witnesses but are appealing for anyone else who might have seen the confrontation to contact Tamworth police on 6768 2999.
