Jai Campbell told the victim behind the counter at the Armidale BWS bottle shop in Armidale Central he was armed when he confronted him on October 21.
The now 34-year-old appeared in Armidale Local Court for sentencing this week after admitting to one charge of robbery.
Magistrate Michael Holmes said prison was the only option for Campbell for his actions during the hold-up.
Campbell walked into the store, off Beardy Street, about 7.45pm and took a bottle of vodka to the counter. He threatened the store employee, claiming to be armed with a weapon and demanded money.
The employee handed over cash and Campbell took the vodka and fled.

The robbery was captured on CCTV and witnesses gave police descriptions of Campbell, which led to street patrols. They found several items connected to the robbery in the CBD.
About two hours later, police were called by the public to a man acting suspiciously on the Armidale bike track.
Campbell was arrested and has been behind bars ever since.
Mr Holmes said the sentence was to be served concurrently with other prison terms Campbell is serving.
He was given a 25 per cent discount for his early guilty plea and ordered to spend at least nine months behind bars before he’s eligible for release.
Campbell will be eligible for parole in July next year.
