In his first international meet since the Rio Olympics in 2016, Fraser-Holmes sealed a place on the podium but was a distant six seconds behind Japanese winner Daiya Seto.

The 27-year-old Fraser-Holmes clocked a time of 4mins 2.74sec to edge out third-placed Brazilian Brandon Almeida.

The Novocastrian was pleased to be back among the medals after he was banned from swimming for 12 months after he neglected to update his "whereabouts" and missed three out-of-competition drug tests.

"I really wanted to make sure I was on the podium tonight, to make sure I could re-establish myself after the last 12 months and I feel like I did that tonight," Fraser-Holmes said post race.

Holly Barratt (50m backstroke), Jess Hansen (100m breaststroke) and the women's 4x200m relay all took bronze to take Australia to 10 medals.

The relay team of Ariarne Titmus, Minna Atherton, Carla Buchanan and Abbey Harkin touched in 7:36.40 to break the Australian and Commonwealth records.

Cameron McEvoy missed qualifying for the 100m freestyle by 0.16 while the men's 50m medley relay were eighth in the final.

Emily Seebohm was sixth in 100m individual medley and edged out compatriot Harkin, who was seventh in her maiden individual international final.

With one day of competition remaining Australia are sixth (two gold, 10 medals total) on the medal table with the US leading with 11 gold (27 medals in total).
