Officers are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident inside Coles in Tamworth Square, off Peel Street, on Sunday afternoon.
The 15-year-old boy was shopping with his mother and was in the self-service check out area of the store when the man confronted him and punched him once in the face.
The boy was left with swelling and soreness to his cheek.
Police said the offender had an outburst in the store and was running around and “shadow-boxed” a security guard, but did not assault him.
The man then grabbed a pushbike in the plaza and threw it at the doors of the neighbouring jewellery store, damaging the doors.
The man then walked into the service area and punched the teenager without any warning.

He was last seen wearing a bone or cream-coloured baseball cap, a red shirt with white stripes on the shoulder and dark sleeves and dark shorts.
Police have seized the bike and anyone with information is urged to contact Tamworth police on 6768 2999.
