The speed limit near the Curlewis turn-off on the Kamilaroi Highway is currently 100km/h and will be reduced to 80km/h for the 1.4km stretch.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said the reduction would increase driver awareness of the crossing.
“Curlewis is a growing community, which means more motorists are using this level crossing,” he said.
“We need to make sure those people living there and driving past are kept as safe as possible and that’s why we’re asking people to slow down when approaching this level crossing.
“Reducing the road speeds to a maximum of 80km/h allows the motorist more time to react and decreases the likelihood of vehicles not being able to stop at level crossings.”
Mr Anderson said use of the railway line was also increasing.
“Roads and Maritime Services carried out a speed zone review, which found a recent development application for Curlewis would increase the volume of local traffic,” he said.
”Combined with a major increase in train movements from the Gunnedah Basin, a proactive speed zone change was necessary.”
The review was carried out in consultation with the Gunnedah Shire Council and NSW Police and in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines and the Speed Limit on Approach to Active Level Crossings Police.
