South Tamworth have claimed the one-day title without a ball being bowled in the final.
Their clash against City United, slated for No.1 Oval on Friday night, was called off due to heavy rain earlier in the week. Souths had finished top of the table.
South Tamworth captain Mitch Smith said it was “floated” having the final played on Sunday, but Souths would have had “half the team” unavailable. “It was just too short of notice to reschedule,” he said.
“It’s not a graceful way to get a title. But I think we’re more disappointed in the sense that we didn’t play.
“They had a pitch prepared for today [Saturday’s clash between City and Bective at No.1 Oval] that was rock hard and ready to go at 5pm yesterday [Friday, the scheduled start of the final] … It’s just weird.”
In a text, Tamworth cricket boss Ben Middlebrook said the match was called off on Friday as it “was too wet to get a wicket up, and there was no reserve day for the one-day finals unfortunately”.
