The 22-year-old opener produced a breakthrough maiden first-grade century as his 107 helped guide Old Boys to 6-306 declared, in 61 overs, on day one of their clash against West Tamworth at Riverside 1 on Saturday.
In reply, Wests were 3-71 at stumps.
A member of Tamworth junior sides from under-12 to under-16, Sommers made his first-grade debut for this season in a loss to South Tamworth last round, making two. Prior to that, he had played only eight top-grade games, before taking last season off.

His previous highest score was 82, which he got in a third-grade match against Wests in October.
Sommers said he had played lower-grade cricket with his friends “for a bit of fun” but decided to try “to get the best out of myself” this season. He is “feeling good” and hopes “to keep going”.
"I’ve been feeling pretty good all year,” the Farrer alumnus added. “I’ve just been working at little things just to keep in the game, sort of thing, and yesterday [Saturday] it all kind of clicked and worked as one.”
“I’ve just been trying to bat time, more than anything – try to get myself into a good spot to score big runs.”
Ahead of the match, Old Boys suffered rare back-to-back losses, against City United and South Tamworth, to slump to fourth on the ladder. On Saturday they were back to their ruthless best, with Aaron Hazlewood (90) posting his highest score of the season.
For Wests, Dan Collinson claimed 3-72 off 16 overs.
