About 4.40pm on Sunday, the victim was at home in Quinn Street when a young boy ran into the loungeroom and grabbed a handbag and purse.
The boy, described only as Aboriginal in appearance and about 10 to 14 years old, ran out the back door.
The victim gave chase for some distance, and the offender dropped the handbag, but took off with the purse.
Police were called and patrolled the area, and are following several leads.
STOLEN CAR RECOVERED
Meanwhile, officers have found a ute stolen during a break-in to a business in Dampier Street.
The Holden Colorado with a large builder’s box and tools was taken when offenders hit the business between 10pm on Sunday and 5am Monday.
On Monday afternoon, the ute was found abandoned in West Tamworth and has been seized by police as they investigate who was behind the stealing.

BREAK-INS THWARTED
Police said neighbours thwarted a break-and-enter at a Grant Street house after thieves tried to break-in through the roof.
The roof tiles were removed from the single story house late-Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday, but one of the tiles fell from the roof and smashed onto the ground.
Neighbours heard the commotion and alerted police, before the offenders fled without gaining access.
Similarly, an alarm thwarted offenders who broke into a Bridge Street business on Saturday night.
About 9pm, an offender smashed part of the front door to the office and reached through the broken glass to open the door handle.
But once inside a secondary alarm sounded, and the thief fled empty-handed.
Police said offenders also ransacked a Green Street house on Sunday afternoon but appeared to have left without taking anything.
No one was home but between 12pm and 5.30pm, offenders smashed their way, damaging a door to gain entry.
Once inside, officers said every room was ransacked in the house, but nothing was reported stolen once the residents returned home to find the damage.
Police are appealing for anyone who has any information on the break-and-enters or who might have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area about the time.
Anyone with information is urged to call Tamworth police on 6768 2999.
