The former prolific Riverina premiership trainer, now based at Scone, produces three rising last start winners and the home track advantage for other newcomers throughout an in-depth seven-race program.

The stable is buoyed through the win of promising Falerina at Rosehill Gardens last Saturday, and previously veteran marvel The Monstar was only beaten late in a Group 2 at Flemington behind Osborne Bulls.

On Monday Cavanough assesses the chances of lesser tiered gallopers backing up from wins at Dubbo, Port Macquarie and Tamworth in recent weeks.

Dual race winning gelding Reward The Chaser is drawn wide and up in distance to a 1600m Cressfield Final Foal BM 58 after a winning by a widening two lengths over 1200m at Dubbo recently.

“Yep, first time at 1600m but I’m in the corner of the owner who is confident he’ll make a ‘miler’ and we’re going in with a strong foundation,” Cavanough said.

“He led and closed off strongly at 1200m and third up we’ve got the added race fitness.”

Reward The Chaser carries 60.5kg for former south coast jockey Adrian Layt, who is getting regular rides with success on northern tracks for Cavanough.

Layt also rides four year-old gelding Ibini with the promise of two wins from five race starts with 57.5kg into an Emirates Park Class 3 (1100m).

Ibini sat on the speed for Layt and finished best to win a Scone 1100m class 3 in fast time.

“Developing into a really nice type, he was formerly with Ben Smith, he did a good job first up for us and he can keep progressing,” he said.

The same can be said for Magpie who at just his second start was dominant winning a Port Macquarie 1206m Maiden by a widening 2.7 lengths, backed into $1.95.

The three-year-old gelding will be ridden by Grant Buckley, a regular rider for Cavanough, with 58.5kg into a Pryde’s Easifeed Class 1 (1400m).

“He’s up in distance and grade but he was strong closing at 1200m first up off a really nice trial,'' Cavanough said.

Into the bargain Magpie was considered promising enough to debut in a Canterbury Park Maiden in February where he was in the market and with the lead to the turn in a race won by the Godolphin’s talented Marmaris.

Cavanough’s chances however don’t end with three last start winners.

“We’ve got a couple in the maidens that have shown us ability, The Cyprian is a nice mare and drawn nicely off a barrier trial,” he said.

The NZ bred mare carries 57kg for Buckley in the third event.
