A stylised lizard is the ‘face’ of this year’s Black Gully Festival – an annual celebration that brings people together to enjoy music, art, the environment and the community.

Designed by local artist Simon Mellor, this year’s logo makes a creative mark while representing many elements of what the Black Gully Festival is all about.
“Black Gully Festival is a free and inclusive community event – and it is a lot of fun,” said Mr Mellor. “It is a whole day of live music, art exhibitions and creative workshops for children and adults. There are food stalls, market stalls and stalls showcasing many of the community’s active groups and organisations.”
Black Gully is a testament to the event’s environmental theme. Since the festival began eight years ago, the gully has been transformed - from what had previously become infested with weeds to a more natural environment.
“Tree planting and other activities in and around the gully are highlights of the Black Gully Festival each year,” said Mr Mellor.
The 2018 Black Gully Festival will be held between 10am and 10pm on 17 November in the parklands behind New England Regional Art Museum and adjacent to the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place.
- The Creek Stage will showcase local acts from 10.20am.
- The front courtyard of NERAM will provide a stage for acoustic performers from 10.50am.
- ‘The Basement’ will showcase some talented younger performers from 2pm.
Musicians of Armidale
The whole community will be introduced to newly formed community group ‘The Musicians of Armidale’ when it formally launches at this year’s Black Gully Festival.

“The Black Gully Festival has been a highlight on the local live music calendar since it began 8 years ago,” said Carol Elder, spokesperson for the group.
‘The Musicians of Armidale’ began as the shared vision of a small group of passionate local artists dedicated to providing opportunities for musicians to play and for the community to enjoy live music. The group was founded in the belief that Armidale is a hotspot for live music and musicians and aims to encourage new, young and existing musicians.
They have been active already this year, putting their name to live music events at several venues in Armidale. Now, having confirmed it has a role to play, ‘The Musicians of Armidale’ will officially launch as a community group at the 2018 Black Gully Festival.
