The Kootingal Hotel’s Mullets for MND competition is in full swing, with almost 20 entrants letting the locks flow, already eclipsing the $10,000 mark with over two months remaining.

Publican Andrew Yeo and his team launched the competition as a bit of tongue in cheek last month, never expecting it to gain so much traction so quickly.

“It has been pretty cool to see so many people take the challenge on,” Mr Yeo said.

“We were hoping to raise $10,000 – we are going to kick-arse.” 

The mullets will be flowing until at least January 12, when a massive fundraising family day will be held at the hotel, and the best mullets across several categories crowned.

“We are going to have five hours of live entertainment spread across the day, as well as heaps of raffles, hopefully some guest speakers ad plenty of laughs,” Mr Yeo said.

“We are also selling hats for those that don’t want to grow a mullet, and every dollar raised is going to the Macquarie University Research Centre.”

The live entertainment includes sets from Jared Scott and Kyle Carter, with more to be announced before the big day, while there are also plans to have a bucking bull, jumping castle and plenty more entertainment for the whole family.

“It is all about raising awareness as well as the money, and about having a good laugh while doing something for a top cause – the fundraising day will be a cracker,” Mr Yeo said.

The publican’s father Graham Yeo, who is battling MND has also agreed to “get his mullet on”, and has now thrown the challenge out to fellow MND fighter and good mate Daryl Bath.

The Leader understands that Mr Bath has accepted the challenge, and is currently in the planning phase with his stylist.
