THE Australian air force flew past Oxley High School this week in a bid to get more kids thinking about defence careers.

It might have looked like fun and games, with students given the opportunity to take the controls in a Super Hornet flight simulator, but the kids also got the chance to act as mission aircrew and test their skills as a mission controller.
The simulator experience was run by Sergeant Brad Postle who said it was aimed at dispelling myths about air force careers and giving regional kids a rare insight into the industry.

“There’s an idea that the air force is almost un-achievable for a lot of people,” he said.
But it is quite achievable for most students, he said, with passes in subjects like English, maths and science.
The simulator experience has headed to Armidale, where it will promote potential jobs to New England Girls’ School students.
“We wish to highlight it is achievable to females, very much achievable,” he said.
The program also highlighted the career opportunities available in the air force outside of pilot work.
