A groundswell petition launched last year calling for an upgrade of the facility attracted more than 12,000 signatures.
There has been no funding commitment to date, but this year’s state budget saw $700 million allocated for mental health infrastructure.

Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson previously said the Banksia had been “identified for funding”, but it was still crucial for the community to rally to get the unit to the top of the list when it came to securing the money needed for an upgrade.
Mr Anderson didn’t know how much funding was needed for the upgrade.
NSW mental health minister Tanya Davies previously said Banksia was “more than 20-years-old and while it provides a safe and professional service to consumers, our initial assessment confirms there is a case to upgrade it to more modern standards”.
