Returning on Sunday, October 14, the bush-based race is open to a wide range of ages and ability levels, with riders able to compete in teams or as individuals.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a very difficult track. I would say it caters for everyone. I would say if you’re a weekend rider that want to go out and do a few laps with some friends, that would be perfect,” organiser and club member Michelle Rees said.
Starting from the Copeton kiosk, there are two loops available; one 4.5km track (to be ridden over three hours) for under 13s teams and under 15s individuals and a 12km track (to be ridden over six hours) for under 17s teams, under 19 individuals and open individuals and teams. An ‘A’ and ‘B’ line will allow riders to choose a route to suit their ability level, and the lap number is flexible.
“Anyone that thinks they might like to have a go. It’s very casual as far as if someone wants to do the six hour, but they only want to do four laps - that’s not a problem,” Rees said. Laps are expected to take between 40-60 minutes to complete.
“If someone gets to four hours and says ‘oh no, I’ve had enough’, they can stop.”
With rocky climbs, log obstacles and bushy surrounds, Rees said the tracks make the most of the natural terrain.
Club members have been working hard to re-establish the tracks after a fire and two years without riders. Ian Rees felt Inverell was very lucky to have “such facilities that are volunteer-established”.
To register, visit the Inverell Mountain Bike Club Facebook page. Non Mountain Bike Australia Members will need to purchase a one day race licence for insurance purposes.
The race begins at 9am on October 14, with sign ups from 7am. There are trophies to be won, as well as a free bike service from The Bike Shed Inverell for the top male and female six hour riders.
