But, it’s surprisingly more upbeat than you’d expect.
“It is more of a fun song,” Simmonds said.
“My musical director who’s my brother-in-law was playing a rift, the word rejected came to mind and I don’t know why it did but the lyrics came easily.
“It’s a tongue-in-cheek song, we’ve all been through break up situations unfortunately and it’s trying to capture the lighter side of the bad stuff, it’s an upbeat song that appeals to people who have been through all of that.”
Drawing on her own emotions helped her to write the song.
Chatting fresh off the set of a gig at the Mildura Country Music Festival, Simmonds career is on a steady trajectory to success.
She’s been handpicked as an opener for John Farnham at the Hay Mate: Buy A Bale fundraiser concert later this year and just wrapped up recording her third studio album More Than Meets The Eye.
On Saturday she’s off to the Southern Stars Awards where she’s been nominated for Female Artist of the Year and in the next few weeks will release the video clip for Rejected.
"I think every process is different, sometimes the lyrics come first and sometimes the music – in this case the riff came first so it’s interesting,” Simmonds said.
“I’m at the Mildura Country Music Festival and I’ve been here for five days, it’s pretty full on and there’s big crowds but all the artist play a couple of gigs a day.
“It’s very different from Tamworth, this music festival is much more traditional, the crowds are older and the people that are here love traditional country music.

“I think in Tamworth you have more of everything and you can choose what you want to see, whereas you aren’t going to hear pop country here.”
Simmonds said she hopes listeners can relate to Rejected, or at least get up and have a boogie to it.
“It’s just an upbeat fun song about a sad topic but it doesn’t sound sad so I hope when people listen to it they feel really happy,” she said.
The seven time Golden Guitar winner will tour extensively for the rest of this year, stopping at Tamworth’s own Country Music Festival in January 2019.
