Werris Creek Pool is 50 years old. On Saturday next, October 6 the Werris Creek War Memorial Swimming Pool will celebrate its 50th Anniversary.
The Street Parade, along Single Street, starts at 10.30am. At the Pool there’s live music with Back Trakkin and the Signal Singers from 11.30am and the Werris Creek Lions & RFS will put on a barbecue.
Dawn Fraser AC MBE is our Guest of Honour. Dawn is an Australian freestyle champion swimmer, and is one of only three swimmers to have won the same Olympic individual event three times.
Dawn won eight Olympic medals, including four gold; and six Commonwealth Games gold medals.
In 1968 when the pool opened, it was the climax of many years of community fund raising.
£47,000 was raised by the community and that inspired the local council and state governments to join in. There were Charity Queen fund raising competitions in 1964 and 1965 that crowned six Charity Queens – four of the Queens will be joining us for the celebration.
The festivities begin at 8am on Saturday morning with a Street Market in Single Street and breakfast cooked by the Quirindi Lions. Werris Creek Library has a must-see sixties-themed Knitted Exhibition opening at 9am.

The Charity Queens will represent the local community - everyone is invited and encouraged to join in this special moment in history.
When the pool closed at the end of the last swimming season, a major upgrade began. The $500,000 upgrade, funded by LPSC and the NSW Government, is transforming the facility and will be completed for the 50th Anniversary.
Everyone is invited to look around their new swimming facility. Festivities continue in the evening with a Celebration Buffet at the Bowling & Tennis Club; after the buffet, there’s an outdoor children’s movie on the LPSC Big Screen and live music with Werris Creek super group Jess & the Gerries.
There’s more live local music talent with The Blues Train performing at the Commercial Hotel in the evening. The people of Werris Creek and their local businesses have contributed generously to make this 50th Anniversary Celebration enjoyable and memorable – save the date and celebrate!
