Pirates coach Mat Kelly has often quipped that captain Conrad Starr is like a fine wine and getting better with age and that was reflected when the Central North premiers’ held their presentation night.
For the second consecutive year the number eight took home the Pat McCarthy Memorial Shield as the first grade best and fairest.
The runaway top tryscorer for the competition with 28 five-pointers, one more than than last season, and the zone best and fairest runner-up after receiving votes in half his games, Starr was also again the club’s highest point-scorer and also picked up the Graham Yeo Award.
Pirates’ “Mr Fix-it” aka Sam Collins won the Tamex Perpetual Shield as the first grade players’ player while Bart Leach was adjudged the best forward and Jackson Sharpe the best back.
Phoebe McLoughlin was the women’s 7s highest point-scorer and also their best and fairest, while Andrew Moodie received the Phar Lap Award, Will Sorensen the Jack Cutcliffe Memorial Shield and Ali Faulkner the Buccaneers Award.
Doughal O’Reilly won the representative player of the year after playing for the NSW Schoolboys, while Hamish McLaren was recognised as the Junior Club Person of the Year and Jess Finney and Jodie Kent the Club Lady of the Year.
