The twice weekly service from Tamworth to Dubbo performed best, averaging 32 per cent full over a six month period.
But, the Newcastle run came up short of interest shown in the initial community consultation, with just five per cent full on the six times a week trip.
“There has been positive feedback from customers using the trial between Tamworth and Newcastle, but the service hasn’t performed in line with the interest shown during community consultation,” a NSW TrainLink spokesman said.
“We have seen positive signs with the services between Tamworth and Port Macquarie and Dubbo, with both gaining a following that we hope to be able to build on.”
The twice a week service to Port Macquarie is pulling a 17 per cent average in passengers full.
Trials began in March after a community push for better transport connections between neighbouring regional cities.

NSW TrainLink is encouraging anyone with an interest in the service to give it a whirl before the trial is up.
“We have been reviewing customer demand and feedback for the three trials and we will be making an announcement shortly about ongoing plans for the services,” the spokesman said.
It’s believed numbers will increase during the warmer months with more people travelling for weekend getaways to the coast.
