Barraba on Saturday, September 22 and Bundarra, on the following Saturday, September 29, will provide trainers a chance for their horses to qualify for Inverell’s version of the “one day championships” in November.
Only runners at the one day club meetings – which are held at Deepwater, Glen Innes, Bingara, Narrabri, Warialda, Mungindi, Barraba, Bundarra and Tabulam – are eligible to run in the $20,000 Battlers Cup which is run as a BM58 handicap over 1400 metres.
The inaugural Battlers Cup attracted great interest and betting turnover when run at the Inverell club’s New Year’s Day Cup meeting earlier this year.
The cup has now been moved to be a feature on the Inverell Sky2 meeting on November 24 with additional prizemoney.
Both Barraba and Bundarra programs have the traditional open cup over the 1400-metre distance.
There is also sprint and distance low benchmark races at the meetings.
Those races should enable horses at various stages of their preparations to run and then be set for the 1400-metre trip in the Battlers Cup on the spacious Inverell track in November.
The ‘last chance saloon’ for qualifying is Tabulam’s iconic meeting on the banks of the Clarence River in November.
Inverell Jockey Club hopes the staging of the Battlers Cup will give the horses that support the one day club circuit in the north a chance to compete for TAB prizemoney against other ‘one day standard’ horses.
