The highlight of the primary school year was held at Walcha Central School last Thursday when every student primped and preened and dressed up as their favourite book character.
Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature, and this often includes book character parades.
The Walcha Central School students dressed up and also wrote a short essay on which book was one of their personal treasures ( in keeping with this year’s theme ‘Find your treasure’).
Both children and parents put in a Herculean effort to create individual costumes that stand out from the store-bought crowd. But whether their outfit was off-the-rack or bespoke – all the children enjoyed themselves along with the cheering spectators.
Year 7 and 8 students also participated in a poetry workshop led by the Children's Literature Festival.
Over at St Patrick’s Primary School last week, local author John Heffernan visited the students to talk about the joy of reading books and writing them for a living.
