Missen will take the drive behind Maz while Dean Chapple will handle He’s Our Boy. The winning trainer will receive a gig as the trophy.
The Glenn Tomlin Memorial is exclusively for drivers and horses trained in the Hunter, Newcastle, Central Coast, Tamworth and Taree region – honouring the memory of Glenn Tomlin, a promising young harness racing driver who was killed in a training accident 21 years ago at age 22.
The $10,000 Somerset Meats Newcastle Derby will then see fellow Tamworth trainer Greg Coney gear up Pay Me The Change to contest the 2550 metre feature for three-year-olds. Pay Me The Change comes in off a last-start win at Newcastle on July 13 over 1609m, with a mile rate of 1min 58.4sec. The horse will be driven Madi Young – stepdaughter of Coney.
It is good to see former northern reinsman Tom Ison also having a drive in the Derby with the Black Prince from the Roy Roots Jnr stables.
Young has certainly had all her stars aligned lately. After taking out the Nic Dewar Memorial Rising Star series, she was announced as an ambassador for the New South Wales Standardbred Owners Association.
The association has selected two ambassadors for their bonus race series, to be held between August and December. The other ambassador is Blake Micallef. With 12 race meetings to be shared between the two, Young is down for the Tamworth meeting on August 30 and Newcastle on October 26 as part of her six nominated meetings.
Congratulations to local owners Ernie Mabbott and his son Anthony on the top run of Tralee Rocks to finish third in the $50,000 Group 2 Sportswriter Alabar NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO Fillies Blue Final at Menangle last Saturday night. Now trained by Clayton Harmey, the little filly is set to contest the final event at Newcastle on Saturday night.
Albion Park has its big night of racing on Saturday night with Lola Weidemann, who competed at Thursdays Tamworth meeting, listed to take the drive behind the Barb Barry-trained Ginger Mickey in the $100,000 2018 QBred Triad-2yo Colts & Geldings (G1).
The $200,000 UBET Blacks A Fake Queensland Championship (G1) has attracted plenty of super stars but one name we know in the field is Ultimate Art, who will be under the guidance of Menangle trainer Shane Sanderson. Sanderson will looked after Ultimate Art for regular trainer Michael Formosa while he enjoys an extended stay in Malta with his family.
Condolences are extended to the family of Jim Lupton after his passing. Jim was the photo-finish operator at the Tamworth Harness Racing Club for many years and will be missed by many.
