Because of Her We Can | NAIDOC Week Feature
Everyone, regardless of their culture, has a woman they look up to. In the Aboriginal community, there is a particular respect for their women, many of whom, through their struggles, have imbued the current and future generations with a sense of strength and resilience.
Now this region’s Indigenous community can literally walk down Tamworth’s main street and look up to the women that have paved the way.
Gomeroi Dance Group at Milestone CBD Childcare
ABORIGINAL culture took centre stage at the Milestones CBD Childcare NAIDOC Week celebrations.
Traditional dance performed by the Gomeroi Dance Group wowed the crowds, while kids joined in on the dance floor.
Centre manager Krista Lynch had her own grandmother come to the celebrations, in line with the NAIDOC theme, ‘Because of Her We Can’.
NAIDOC Week 2018: Weaving Workshop
Traditional Aboriginal weaving circles have been happening at the Tamworth Youthie this week, in preparation for Friday’s NAIDOC Week family fun day and corroboree in Bicentennial Park.
Nakeatee Simon lead a group of young and old Indigenous women in traditional weaving practices. The group of women are weaving headbands, skirts, belts and bracelets for a traditional corroboree, that will be preformed at the family fun day.
Tamworth NAIDOC Week 2018: Gomeroi Dance Company Workshop
The Gomeroi Dance Company is leading traditional Aboriginal dance workshops at the Tamworth Youth Centre through out NAIDOC Week, with a strong focus on traditional story telling.
Connection to land and culture is being taught through traditional Aboriginal dance this week, in the lead up to the NAIDOC celebrations on Friday at Bicentennial Park.
Gomeroi Dance Company co-founder Brad Flanders said the dance will reflect this year’s theme ‘Because of Her, We Can’.
